A Holistic Approach to Children's Health Care

At Mind Body Shine we recognise that conventional paediatrics is essential. There are absolutely times when we need antibiotics and big-gun medicines. But there are many times when we don’t—for instance, when there’s a chronic condition, like eczema, or a stress-related ailment, like bedwetting—popping a pill may not be enough.

For these conditions, what our kids need is a customized approach tailored to their unique needs. This is especially true if beyond being simply disease-free and reaching his milestones, you are also hoping to improve your child's overall academic performance and athletic abilities.

How is a holistic approach different from the usual trip to the doctor’s office?

Beyond medicating symptoms, a holistic approach to kids health focuses on wellness. While orthodox methods seek to provide quick relief, at Mind Body Shine, our goal is to look at the bigger picture to identify and rebalance underlying causes to provide long-lasting solutions to each child’s health concerns.

We believe that each child’s manifestation of wellness or illness is caused by the unique way in which their individual biochemical and genetic makeup interacts with everything that they are exposed to on a daily basis – from the food they eat, to the air they breathe, to the water they drink, to the environmental pollutants and toxins they absorb, to the thoughts they think.

We partner with parents to help them to make the best healthcare decisions for their children and help them understand how to integrate conventional medicine and natural remedies to help their children thrive to their fullest potentials.

What is an example of a holistic approach at work?

Consider Clare (name has been changed to protect the patient’s privacy)—she’s 2. She had been having severe eczema and was taking more and more medication, but her skin was still breaking out all the time. Bothered by severe itch, she was cranky and upset all the time and generally did not want to socialise with others. Upon doing a thorough health review, her mum revealed that she had been introduced to cow's milk formula from birth, was eating quite a few seemingly healthy foods that were in fact contributing to itchiness and relentless scratching, and as it turned out, while they had switched to organic skincare products for her, they were still using many chemical-based cleaners in the house.

After the consultation, our naturopath used a combination of holistic nutrition, homeopathy, and herbal medicine to help reduce the itch and inflammation on the skin, but more importantly to heal the gut and improve intestinal health, which is a common root cause for eczema. Clare's family switched to using chemical-free cleaners at home and her mum began transforming her grocery-shopping habits—no more foods that contribute to a leaky gut and itch. As Clare's skin got better and itched less, she also became a happier and more outgoing child. One change built upon another. Now Clare's skin is clear, she's out and about playing with others, and working with her doctor, the parents have even been able to lower the use of her medication and only for the occasional flare-up.
